The Cancer Association of Namibia (“CAN”) is a non-profit welfare organization that has been serving  Namibians for many years.  CAN’s mission is to fight Cancer and its consequences countrywide, to be benefit of all Namibians and in cooperation with the community and the Namibian Government.

In fulfilling its mission, CAN’s activities include research, health education, information and general support services.

HOUSE ACACIA:  THE HOME AWAY FROM HOME    
House Acacia was established in 1986  and is an interim home where cancer sufferers under treatment stays FREE OF CHARGE.
Patients are transported to the hospital for treatments.
House Acacia has 21 beds with linen and towels. 
3 Meals are provided daily.  Sufficient space and private areas are available for patients to use for meditation and privacy.   

Accompanying spouse pay N$50-00
per day (includes 3 meals).

2007 Year Programme 

 1.         CANCER OF THE YEAR:   COLORECTAL CANCER 

In the Western World colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths after lung cancer:

                In Namibia it is the 7th most common cancer.

                RISK FACTORS:

-                      Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)

-                      Hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC)

-                      Inflammatory bowel diseases e.g. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease

-                      Adenomatous bowel polyps can change into cancers

-                      Smoking

-                      Western diet = high fat, low fibre

 

SCREENING:

-                      All people with family history of the above should have annual colonoscopy starting at age 20

-                      People with FAP usually have total colectomy before 20 years of age

 

PREVENTION:

-                      No smoking

-                      Diet – low fat; high fibre; high Vitamins

-                      Daily Aspirin if possible (small dose)

 

SIGNS and SYMPTOMS:

-                      Alteration in bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation)

-                      Rectal bleeding

-                      Anaemia

-                      Rectal discomfort / pain

-                      Abdominal distension / cramps

 

DIAGNOSIS:

-                      Barium – enema

-                      Colonoscopy

-                      Ultrasound / CT scan abdomen

-                      Tumor marker – CEA (blood test)

-                      Chest x-ray

-                      Biopsy (done by Surgeon)

 

TREATMENT:

SURGERY:

-                      Wide resection of cancer and surrounding lymph glands without colostomy if possible

-                      A very low rectal cancer can only be resected by an AP – resection (abdominoperineal resection) with permanent colostomy

-                      In some select patients single liver metastases can be resected

 

RADIOTHERAPY:

-                      In rectal cancer patients:

·                      Post-operatively if possible lymph glands

·                      If cancer is not operable

 

CHEMOTHERAPY:

-                      Adjuvant (preventative) chemotherapy given if lymph glands are affected – usually given for 6 months

-                      Chemotherapy is offered in patients with metastatic disease – to relieve pain or treat discomfort

 

FOLLOW UP after TREATMENT:

-                      Important to detect recurrence or metastases early

-                      Annual colonoscopy; Chest x-ray; Ultrasound abdomen; blood tests

2.             SANLAM PAPSMEAR AND BREAST EXAMINATION CLINIC SCHEDULE

 

Due to Sanlam’s ongoing support, the Cancer Association of Namibia can again conduct clinics throughout Namibia.

                The CEO Reinette Koegelenberg uses this opportunity to visit all schools throughout the country where she ceaselessly endeavor to educate learners about Cancer. 

She also visits subcommittees, all business partners and sponsors of the Cancer Association to further the existing good relationship and holds an information meeting in every town.

3.             4th   February 2007 -World Cancer Day

4.             15 February 2007 – World Childhood Cancer Day

5.             In conjunction with PICK ‘N PAY the annual HOT CROSS BUN SALES will take place in March-April where the Cancer Association will receive 10c on every packet of Hot Cross Buns sold.

6.             APPLE PROJECT

                The Bank Windhoek Apple project will be launched end of 13th February 2007 in Windhoek.  The aim of the Cancer Association and Bank Windhoek is to get total involvement of all children in Namibia Schools.  We are educating children to be socially responsible.

                The Apple Thon will take place on 12th April 2006.

                23 April to 30 May 2007 is Apple weeks in Namibia and apples are distributed countrywide.

7.             BOKOMO PANCAKE DAY

                On 27 April 2007 you can buy as many pancakes as you like at John Meinert Street, No. 90.  The “wonderful volunteers: of the Cancer Association:  the people who give time and effort continuously and freely for the love of the cause:  sell pancakes to raise funds.

8.             JAN MÖHR TOKTOKKIES CAMPAIGN:  April / May 2007

9.             CYCLING FOR CHRIST

                Cycling for Christ a Windhoek based cycling club will cycle to raise funds for “Children with Cancer in Namibia” (CHICA) from 07 May – 16 May 2007.

10.           31 May 2007 – World NO SMOKING day

11.           CARNATIONS

                On 11 July 2007 we launch the First National Bank Carnation and Ruler Project and throughout August we distribute carnations and rulers to Namibians who choose to support the continuous fight against this DREADFUL disease CANCER.

12.           MTC CUP FOR CANCER – September – October 2007

During this time participating coffee shops collect donations from clients – for each cup of coffee the equivalent is deposited into the MTC collection tin available at participating coffee shops.

13.           BREAST CANCER – October 2007

October 2007 is Breast Cancer Month.  Breast Cancer is recognized worldwide during October and awareness to early detection of Breast Cancer is created with this campaign.

15.           MEDI-CLINIC FUN RUN/WALK

                Breast Cancer Awareness run/walk countrywide.

16.           The WEIHNACHTSMARK in Walvis Bay is arranged by the subcommittee, on the 2 November 2007.

17.           “CHRISTMAS MEMORIES” presented by the College of the Arts in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia – 9 November 2007.

                Street collections take place at Shopping Malls.
