WHAT IS REACH FOR RECOVERYReach for Recovery Namibia is a non-profit organization designed to provide a network of support to breast cancer suffers and survivors. OUR MISSIONOur mission is to reduce the breast cancer mortality rate and to reduce the stigma associated with the disease as well as promote awareness for the growing breast cancer problem in Namibia. Reach for Recovery will also strive to eradicate myths, misinformation and lack of information about breast cancer. Despite the fact that breast cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in Namibia, it poses a major challenge to good health and care among Namibian women. OUR VISIONOur vision is to successfully engage diverse groups of Namibian women and men in the fight against breast cancer through community education, empowerment, activism and service. We strive to encourage breast cancer survivors to reach out to those who have the disease and to comfort them and to bring hope and relief to them and their families. GOALS & OBJECTIVES1. To increase public awareness about the nature of breast cancer; 2. Encourage the practice of self-examination; 3. Supply information on the availability of diagnostic and treatment facilities; 4. Provide counseling to breast cancer patients and their families; 5. Encourage breast cancer patients to take the required treatment; 6. Establish volunteer, patient and family support networks throughout Namibia. VISITATION: Volunteers visit patients at home or in hospital. Family members are requested to inform the Cancer Association of Namibia WHAT IS BREAST CANCER: Breast caner is a serious disease that could lead to the loss of a breast or even death if not detected early. If the disease is detected early, it can be successfully treated. Most women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 40, but the disease is becoming far more common in younger women. WHO IS AT RISK: All women and in some cases men. EARLY WARNING SIGNS: A lump in the breast, increase in the size of one breast, dimpling of the nipple, enlarged glands, swelling of the armpit, change in the skin around the nipple, nipples not at the same level.
